Why the number is usually higher than you think
Three effects stack. Weekly billing — a $9.99 weekly plan reads as "about ten dollars" and is actually $43 a month and $519 a year. Annual billing disappears from your month-to-month sense of spending and reappears as one surprising charge. And free trials that convert were never consciously added to the list at all. The calculator applies the right multiplier to each cycle so the two totals are comparable.
How the maths is done
Everything is normalised to a year and then divided. Weekly is multiplied by 52, monthly by 12, quarterly by 4, yearly by 1; the monthly figure is the annual total divided by twelve. A $4.99 weekly plan therefore shows as $259.48 a year and $21.62 a month — not $19.96, which is what "about four weeks" gives and which is short by a full month every year. Nothing is rounded until display, and nothing you type leaves this page.
What to do with the total
Sort by what you would not miss.
